Taman Rimba Kiara is a little green gem located in a corner of the TTDI residential area. The above flowering tree, the firmiana malayana or mata lembu, flashes in testimony to man's care-less-ness - it's one of only two trees in the park that had flowered, since then the tree had been chopped down.

A 'fruitful' morning for the Daurian

I was finally able to better distinguish between the male and female Daurian Starling, aka Purple-backed Starling, thanks to this fruiting tree.  And it looked like this could be the latest flock of migrant birds to visit the taman, usually making brief stop-over, seen only for a couple of days before they moved on.

The male has more glossy and darker upper plumage, white underpart, and dark patch on its crown.

The female plumage is more brownish.

These Starlings feed on fruits, berries and insects.  This morning the flock of about twenty truly looked like they were spoilt for choice.
