Taman Rimba Kiara is a little green gem located in a corner of the TTDI residential area. The above flowering tree, the firmiana malayana or mata lembu, flashes in testimony to man's care-less-ness - it's one of only two trees in the park that had flowered, since then the tree had been chopped down.

'Tis the season for Flycatcher-shrikes

The discovery of the Black-winged Flycatcher-shrikes' 'secret' has brought smiles to a quiet taman.
These birds has certainly built a marvel of a little neat nest cup, and it's amazing how similar in texture and colour the nest is to the branch that it sits on - a true craftsmanship in camouflage!

Like any other bird species, the parents were seen diligently to take turns to brood, and looked like calling out for the other to return when the waiting seemed prolonged!

The male spots black upper parts compared to the more brownish female.

And what did one do when brooding - preened.

And then about 14 days later, two tiny chicks popped up.

I guess the parent was rather ambitious when it tried to offer a big catch to its young.

It didn't go down well so let's try again....

And this time she pushed it right in!

It was a rather windy morning and how did Mama protect her babies?

A fierce looking mama when she was spotted!
