Taman Rimba Kiara is a little green gem located in a corner of the TTDI residential area. The above flowering tree, the firmiana malayana or mata lembu, flashes in testimony to man's care-less-ness - it's one of only two trees in the park that had flowered, since then the tree had been chopped down.

When a meal ain't for sharing

It's always a good day for any Monitor Lizard around the taman.  And no wonder there is a healthy population here - within one hour, two adults came by, then two young ones dropped clumsily into the river, pursuing one another to the other end of the river.

But for this one it's happy hour as it dragged its huge prize up the slope.

But I was surprised to see that it didn't pull its catch along immediately into the undergrowth as I have observed with other monitor lizards with prey.
And it looked very pleased with itself as it halted midway, appearing to relish the fish by sniffing it from top to bottom!

And that's a one great smile to say the least!

Savouring as it lingered over its bounty!

And then it's up into its haunt to enjoy its meal (or so I thought!)

Almost 30 minutes later, there was a sound of chaotic rush down the slope and I was startled to see a monitor lizard practically fling itself into the river.

And it turned out to be the same one, now hurrying away with its catch.

And then it paused to gulp down the fish, and I took it that perhaps it needed the water to help it down the throat being an extraordinary big catch after all!

A satisfied looking fella.

But within seconds this one came down.

And the entire episode clicked!  So the earlier one was fleeing with its prize from this bigger fella!

Outrun, it returned to where it came from, but not before I wondered whether its rusty colour has anything to do with the colour of the river bed.
