The firmiana malayana or mata lembu, remains here in testimony to man's care-less-ness - its tree had since been felled. Let not the birds leave too.

Olive-winged Bulbul

A couple of years ago, and that's already too long, coming across the Olive-winged Bulbuls in the bukit would have been easy.

But today to spot one would bring sighs of relief and gladness that they are still around.  And unfortunately it's only a sighting of one, or two, on these rare occasions.

Bulbul's command

Just ignore her, and that's it, no more and no less from these Olive-winged Bulbuls.

And thus an intruder was put in her place!

Olive-winged, not streaked

My frequent encounter with the Olive-winged Bulbul (Pycnonotus plumoses) has changed my stand that this species is next most common here in the bukit to the Stripe-throated Bulbul (Pycnonotus finlaysoni).

I wonder what has happened to the Red-eyed Bulbul (Pycnonotus brunneus) which I used to think was more ubiquitous.

The Olive-winged Bulbul announces its presence with its sharper calls compared to the more throaty Strip-throated Bulbul and the whistle-like calls of the Red-eyed Bulbul.

And newer birders in their over-zealousness have tended to mistake the olive-winged bulbul for the streak-eared bulbul whose presence is restricted to the northern part of the country.

When Woodshrikes are dominant

Outnumbered, an Olive-winged Bulbul seemed to be glued to its perch as a small flock of Large Woodshrikes descended, made a din, foraged and promptly left.

The flock seemed to consist of adult and sub-adult Woodshrikes.

As I was passing by

They came, one after another ...

Easy-peasy there - it came, picked, gulped, and rested.

Couldn't make out what this one was trying to do, flew down, called relentlessly, then off it went!

And this too, popped in, hopped about, and off it fled.

A silhouette is still sighting!

Another normal day up the bukit and the Olive-winged Bulbul to break the monotony.

And it was exciting to come across the Everett’s White-eye again although only managed a silhouette of the bird; the last time I saw it was about a year ago.

Hoping to keep on counting Bulbuls

I finally believe the Olive-winged Bulbuls do live well in the Bukit when I chanced upon them on more than one occasion during my short walk.
It's great to know that there are at least five species of Bulbuls in the bukit, and all can be easily spotted (except for the black-crested), namely the yellow-vented, red-eyed, stripe-throated, black-crested, and this olive-winged.
This one was rather cute as it stretched to have a proper at me!

Then it went on to mind its own business, preening as if I was not there.
