Taman Rimba Kiara is a little green gem located in a corner of the TTDI residential area. The above flowering tree, the firmiana malayana or mata lembu, flashes in testimony to man's care-less-ness - it's one of only two trees in the park that had flowered, since then the tree had been chopped down.

Gold-whiskered Barbet

Quiet time at the taman again drove me to Bukit Kiara to seek my luck, which turned out to be fulfilling.  I've always heard the Gold-whiskered Barbet calling but have yet to sight it.  This time it suddenly flew in and perched right above me.  Despite the poor lighting I was fortunate enough to manage some decent shots because it perched long enough, calling out to another.  So now I know there's a pair because the response was loud and clear.  Perhaps lucky next time if I could come across the pair together!
This Barbet is one of the largest of the barbet species.  Its green plumage is a great camouflage when it's among leaves so normally one has to be alert to its calls which would betray its presence.  These birds are basically fruit eaters like berries and figs.
