Taman Rimba Kiara is a little green gem located in a corner of the TTDI residential area. The above flowering tree, the firmiana malayana or mata lembu, flashes in testimony to man's care-less-ness - it's one of only two trees in the park that had flowered, since then the tree had been chopped down.

'Shrike' difference

I knew that there were two Brown Shrikes in the taman but to capture them together had proved to be futile thus far.  The best so far was this occasion when I came upon them one after the other in quick succession.

A very rare occasion when it spotted me and did not fly off instantly.

As it flew of in response to the other calling, I followed immediately and came upon this one prancing about.

And there lied the difference in the two, the first a young adult, the second a female adult with its distinct black mask (compared to the less intense black ear covert of the former) I believed.
This seemed to be a pattern so far in most avian species - a young one normally being accompanied by the female, not the male, adult.
