Taman Rimba Kiara is a little green gem located in a corner of the TTDI residential area. The above flowering tree, the firmiana malayana or mata lembu, flashes in testimony to man's care-less-ness - it's one of only two trees in the park that had flowered, since then the tree had been chopped down.

Woodshrike coincidence

Just as I was still pondering over the mistaken identity of the brown shrike and large woodshrike (and my  appreciation to a sharp-eyed blog visitor who reconfirmed the woodshrike identity), it was simply happy coincidence for me the next day to walk into this pair calling out loud, male and female Large Woodshrikes, thereby resurfacing my earlier images of this bird (and to add to this, the next immediate encounter was the brown shrike!).

The male looked like it had just finished a meal as it proceeded to clean its bill.

Then the female started to call out noisily as the male flew off even as I walked about just below for better shooting angles.

This has been one of the better encounters with woodshrikes as this female truly afforded many angles to its beauty even though it's basically a monochrome brown bird.
The female has browner upper-part and eye band like a bandit's mask, in contrast to the male with slate-grey upper-part and broader black eye band.
