Taman Rimba Kiara is a little green gem located in a corner of the TTDI residential area. The above flowering tree, the firmiana malayana or mata lembu, flashes in testimony to man's care-less-ness - it's one of only two trees in the park that had flowered, since then the tree had been chopped down.

A raptor visitor

It's not the migratory period so it came as a surprise to spot this Oriental Honey-buzzard in the taman.  It is a sub-adult.  So after a little research, I learnt that the adult raptors will migrate from Japan, Korea, Northern China and Southern Siberia about mid-September to be followed by the juveniles in late October to early November.  However, when the adults fly home in spring, the juveniles may stay back in countries like Malaysia and spend the summer.  Then they will make their first migration home in spring the following year.
An extract of The Singapore Bird Group offers a possible reason for this behaviour:
".... Could it be because of their diet? The larvae of bees, wasps and other insects may not provide enough fat for them to undertake two long migrations within a short period of six months? Since they are not ready to mate in their first three years, there is no point in making the risky journey back but instead spend the time to build up their strength and save energy."

Neverthless it was a close encounter with this one as it was perched low for me to admire it.

It prolonged its perch as it preened, and I couldn't have asked for more!
