Taman Rimba Kiara is a little green gem located in a corner of the TTDI residential area. The above flowering tree, the firmiana malayana or mata lembu, flashes in testimony to man's care-less-ness - it's one of only two trees in the park that had flowered, since then the tree had been chopped down.

Unexpected cicada beauty

I was totally unprepared for this beauty which stopped me in my track more out of curiosity than recognition.
This black cicada is known as Tacua Speciosa or Emperor Cicada.  Googled, and I learnt that it's one of the largest cicadas in the world, about 6cm and wing span of at least 15cm.  It did look huge on the trunk, like a piece of black hair piece stuck on the bark from afar.
The Tacua Speciosa is native to Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra and Java.  It is known for its large size, opaque vein patterned wings, black body, yellowish green collar, red cruciform elevation, and turquoise or cyan tergites.

As the cicada's wings are so neatly folded, the gorgeous colour of the cyan tergites are hardly visible.
